People often use ‘modern’ and ‘contemporary’ as if they mean the same thing. In design, they are related but distinct.
Modern
Modern design refers to a specific historical movement — early to mid twentieth century — defined by clean lines, functional forms, natural materials and an absence of ornament.
Contemporary
Contemporary design is of the moment. It borrows freely from many styles, evolves constantly and tends to favour open plans, neutral palettes with bold accents, and a mix of textures.
Which should you choose?
If you want a timeless, disciplined look, modern principles are a good guide. If you want a flexible, current style that can be refreshed over time, contemporary is a better fit. Many of the best homes blend the two.
